Few holiday traditions in the Alamo City can match the grace and beauty of thousands of luminarias lighting your path along San Antonio's River Walk

With plenty to do and see throughout the year in San Antonio, it should come as no surprise that the holiday season in the Alamo City brings the festive vibe to another level.

From holiday lights at the San Antonio Zoo to the Ford Holiday River Parade to seasonal celebrations at Six Flags Fiesta Texas and SeaWorld, there is a little something for everyone in November and December.

One event, however, offers a reprieve from the typical hustle and bustle of the holiday season—the tranquil elegance that is the Ford Fiesta de las Luminarias

Ford Fiesta de las Luminarias
Downtown River Walk
Beginning at dusk on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on
December 6-8th, 2019
December 13-15th, 2019

Luminarias are small Mexican Christmas lanterns, with a candle set in sand inside a small bag. The tradition dates back centuries, passed down from Spanish villagers who frequented the Rio Grande Valley in the early Southwest territories of the United States and New Mexico.

Depending on the history, their purpose was to help guide the faithful towards Christmas Mass, or guide the faith into one's home—a symbolic nod to the first Christmas Eve and the Holy Family's trek into Bethlehem.

Carrying on the tradition, every year, the San Antonio River Walk is set aglow with more than 2,000 luminarias. Of course, this old-world tradition has a modern spin with flickering, LED candles glowing from inside each bag.

Starting at dusk, each evening on the weekends of December 6-8th, December 13-15th, and December 20-22nd, you can experience the River Walk come to life. Over 100,000 holiday lights cast a vivid glow from above as the luminarias brighten the walkway along the San Antonio River.

In addition to the illuminating light show, the River Walk offers up another San Antonio holiday tradition with the Ford Holiday Boat Caroling. Every evening from December 5th to December 22nd, you and a group can choose to go caroling on a boat along the San Antonio. Of course, you can simply enjoy the radiant voices of carolers passing by from the river's banks.
