The city supports several senior centers that provide a wealth of educational information and social activities. Whether an individual wants to learn a new skill or simply participate in a weekly card players club, there is always something going on at these local centers. Recently, art classes have been added at some of the locations, and seniors are discovering the joy of painting and self-expression.

Getting Around San Antonio Is Easy

Seniors who drive should have no problem navigating the outer areas of San Antonio by car, but for those who don't drive, the VIA metropolitan transit system makes traversing the narrow downtown streets easier. Bus service is inexpensive, and the VIA offers reduced rates to individuals over the age of 62 and a paratransit service for individuals with disabilities. For fun, retirees can also take a streetcar, courtesy of the VIA, to areas such as the River Walk and the Alamo.

Walking outdoors is feasible much of the year thanks to a pleasant climate that ranks 70 out of 100 on the Sperling's Comfort Index. Most seniors will enjoy the 220 days per year of warm sunshine and the comfortable winters with January lows of 41 degrees Fahrenheit.

Every Day Is a New Adventure

Those who have longed for the day when they could focus on their golf game will appreciate the many top-ranked courses that dot San Antonio's countryside. Seniors can take advantage of reduced rates at the local public courses, and the Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course, located in the Hill Country, offers senior rates Monday through Thursday.

Residents of San Antonio can enjoy a slew of historic and cultural experiences. There is nothing quite like a slow stroll down the River Walk, and the city of San Antonio provides maps that detail paths, ramps and elevators giving seniors easy access to all the restaurants and sights. Many of the museums and historic areas are free, and the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park offers wheelchairs for loan on-site.

Say Good-bye to State Income Tax

Although Texas has high sales and property taxes, the state is very friendly to seniors who are living off their retirement income. Social Security benefits and withdrawals from retirement accounts aren't taxed. Texas doesn't have a state income tax, which is good news for those who plan to continue earning a salary. The unemployment rate is below the national average, which may increase the availability of part-time jobs for retirees who want a little extra spending money.

Experience State-of-the-art Healthcare

If medical care should become necessary, San Antonio is home to some of the nation's best hospitals. The University Health System encompasses several care services including orthopedics, cancer treatments, diabetes management and urgent trauma centers. The Kindred Hospital offers transitional care for those who need extra attention without the full services of an inpatient hospital. In addition, the area has many local doctors and specialty clinics that can service the needs of elderly patients.

Seniors and retirees who are ready to begin the next phase of their life should contact The Graves Group before starting their search for a San Antonio home that fits their dreams and lifestyle.
